New Melbourne inspired coffee roast launched

Black Velvet Night Swimming coffee beansMelbourne coffee roastery and espresso bar Black Velvet Coffee Roasters have launched a new seasonal blend called Night Swimming, which it said was designed to have “a traditional Melbourne flavour”.

Black Velvet Coffee, which is owned and operated by Darren and Jackie Silverman, said Night Swimming is a medium level roast, suiting both black and milk based coffees and all brewing techniques, in particular espresso and on the stovetop. The Company said the roast offered “clean hazelnut aromas, a hint of spice, subtle acidity and a long clean finish”. Continue reading

Canada looks to Aussies for brand advice

The WInnipeg Free Press runs a surprising number of articles mentioning Australia. Here’s another one, by Jennifer Ditchburn of The Canadian Press, which ran on March 15, 2014. A link to the whole article is at the end of our selection.

OTTAWA – From those ubiquitous UGG boots to kayaks and cherries, a little green logo featuring a kangaroo has told Australian consumers what’s been made or grown by their country for nearly 30 years.

Now the Canadian government is looking to the Australian Made campaign as a model for a domestic branding exercise here. This year’s federal budget promised a private-sector steering committee would be struck to make recommendations about a formal Made in Canada system.

Dennis and Janet Woodford

I have said it before, but it bears repeating, that I am often struck by the careers of many of our members who have come from rather humble beginnings. Dennis Woodford is no exception.

He was born in Melbourne, Australia. His father, a WWII veteran, worked for the Wool Commission and qualified for a soldier’s settlement at Bobinawarrah East, a speck on the map southeast of Wangaratta in the Great Dividing Range area. This was Ned Kelly country and several of his artifacts have been found there at Bobinawarrah, not far from Glenrowan, Kelly’s last stand.

Matthew was born in the Sydney suburb of Cronulla – famous for its beaches – and took all his schooling there. He started in on-air radio broadcasting and moved around a lot, working in Goulburn, Dubbo, the Gold Coast, Hobart, Adelaide, Sunshine Coast, and 3 ½ years in Brisbane at B105 FM.

About three years ago, he backpacked by car across Canada and became infatuated with the country. In London, Ontario, he worked in a bar for six months. Continue reading
