World Masters Ultimate Club Championship

All this week in Rosser, MB (30 mins NW of Wpg), New Zealand and Australia are competing in the World Masters Ultimate Club Championship.

Note that finals are on Saturday August 4 at Investors Group Field, so if you can’t make it out to Rosser, there is an opportunity to see our teams in Winnipeg. Here’s hoping both the Kiwis and the Aussies get to the finals.

The New Zealand teams are:

  • Silver Foxes – Women, Pool B
  • Aotearoa Eh!? – Mixed, Pool B

The Australian teams are:

  • Duff Stout – Men, Pool D
  • Fine Wine – Mixed, Pool A

Visit the WMUCC website for tickets and other information. I also found this link especially helpful.

Thanks to Terry Roberts for letting us know about this.

Renewing Australian Passports

Calling our Aussie members and other Australians living in Winnipeg and Manitoba.

If you need to renew your passport, or if the newest additions in your family need to apply for a passport, the Australian High Commission in Ottawa would like to know about it.

Please visit their website and complete a very short survey so they know to visit Winnipeg in 2018. Several of us who need passports renewed this year have already filled out the questionnaire, and the more people who the AHC know about, the more likely we will be on their “must visit” destination list.

Save yourself a trip to Vancouver, Toronto or Ottawa this year or next, and help us bring the AHC to town.

Questions? Email us at info@downunderclub.mb.ca.

This Summer in Winnipeg

In addition to the Down Under Parfait at Sub Zero Ice Cream, two other things to let you know about.

McDonald’s is offering an Aussie BBQ & Egg Burger from July 16 to July 29 as part of its world taste tour. Made with 100% Canadian beef topped with a fresh cracked egg, crispy beet chips, processed cheese, leaf lettuce and a smoky BBQ sauce on a brioche-style bun, it not only looks good, but you could also win a trip to Australia!

And if you are looking for Vegemite, Stonewall Family Foods has small jars of Vegemite for $10.49. It’s in the “British” section of the store, next to Marmite.

The only other place we know has Vegemite is Save On Foods – three locations in Winnipeg. NOTE: London Drugs no longer stocks it and isn’t planning to do so in the future.

If you spot Vegemite anywhere else, or hear of any other Aussie and Kiwi products or locations we should know about, do what Peter and Margaret Munn did and let us know.

Enjoy!

A new way to enjoy Tim Tams this summer

Thanks to DUCW member Margaret Munn for letting us know about the delicious “Down Under” parfait – soft vanilla layered with Nutella, cappuccino crumble, Tim Tam biscuits, and chocolate hazelnut cream-filled wafer.

Get yours today in either a cone or a cup. DELICIOUS!!!

Available now at Sub Zero Ice Cream, 298 Jamison Ave, right here in Winnipeg.

When you get one, take a photo and we’ll post it on our Facebook page.

Yarn June 2018

The June issue of the Yarn is available for download. You can download it here, or from the Yarn archives page.

And let’s start adding in the editorial on these announcement posts…

Apologies for not getting a Yarn together for May, but I was away for half the month, downunder. The primary reason was a reunion of the class of ’69 who attended Queensland Agricultural College – it was certainly great to meet “old” mates again. Of course, with every trip back “home” there are always many reunions – other friends, family and, naturally for me, the birds. I managed to photograph about 40 different birds and chose one of them, the fan-tailed cuckoo, for Birds I view this month, p.6.

Thank you to Jenny Gates for her summary of our ANZAC commemoration on April 28th. While in Queensland, I also visited the Sandgate Museum – friendly volunteers and a very well-presented display of memorabilia – I noticed a protected copy of “The Anzac Book”. I have since found a pdf copy online – 100% the words of the men who wrote them in 2015 at Gallipoli. Something else that caught my eye was a notice on a lamp-post on the South Bank in Brisbane calling for new sensitivities to events of history.

Thank you also to Catherine Bowering for her second part of the Nancy Wake story, Getting to know, p.4 – it’s a big help having such articles written and offered. Others who have contributed this month are Peter, Murray, Judy, Malcolm and our sponsors – Thank you!
