Touch Rugby in Winnipeg

touch rugby 2Something fun and exciting is coming to Winnipeg, with a flavour that will certainly appeal to Aussies, Kiwis and others in our club and beyond.

Caleb Stick is the founder of Winnipeg Touch Rugby. Kiwi born and raised, Caleb has been living in Winnipeg for six years, and is looking to introduce others to this great sport.

“I am hoping to raise awareness about Touch Rugby, which is now officially launching in Winnipeg. It has a governing body as well as partnership with Canada Touch Rugby Inc. Five provinces are in the final stages of launching Canada on both the national and international stage.”

Touch rugby is a minimal contact sport for all skills levels, abilities, and degrees of fitness. The first session will be held from 3.30 pm to 5.30 pm beginning on Sunday April 10 at River Heights School at 1350 Grosvenor Ave.

All members of the public are invited to participate, and there is no cost to play. The Winnipeg group is open to both men and women, with a minimum age of 18. Newcomers are more than welcome!

Simply show up and learn a new sport with minimal rules.

Biking in Southern Australia

WFP art smallMy neighbour Art Brown is about halfway through his 122-day biking adventure in southern Australia.

An article I wrote about his journey was recently published in The Metro and I thought you might enjoy reading his story. You can also follow Art’s daily travels by reading his blog, which is packed with fabulous photos of people and places.

Art is about to take a winged http://www.onlinepharmacytabs.com mode of transportation to explore Uluru – a place I’ve always wanted to go – before continuing his trip across to Perth. And as you will read in the article, he is also supporting Soldier On to help veterans in Canada.

Australia Day and Waitangi Day

aus can nz flagsWe look forward to you joining us this Saturday, February 6, for our Australia Day and Waitangi Day event. Everything gets underway at 6:00 pm at the Scandinavian Cultural Centre, 764 Erin.

It is a potluck event, so we ask that you:

  • prepare a dish using kiwi fruit to enter into the Bake Off Contest, and/or
  • bring a meat dish, salad, veggie dish, or dessert (unless the kiwi fruit dish you bring is a dessert).

Please bring enough for yourselves and a bit extra, just in case.

It’s going to be a great night, with a fun trivia quiz on both countries, and the bar will be open.

See you there and then.

Celebrating Australia Day

browns 1 smIf you would like to celebrate Australia Day with a distinctly Aussie flavour, then consider dropping into Miss Browns Hot Pressed Sandwich & Coffee Co. in Winnipeg between 7:30 am and 3:00 pm on Tuesday January 26. Perhaps a coffee before work, a mid-morning break, lunch, or just to say hi.

Located at 288 William St downtown (south-east of Red River College, and south-west of City Hall), owners Jenn (Cdn) and Steve (Aus) are planning additional Australian options to complement their already amazing menu for anyone who wants to drop in and say g’day.

Famous for their breakfast, Stumptown coffee, house-smoked meats, and fresh cooked local foods, it’s one of few places in town that actually know what you want when you ask for a long black or a flat white.

Be sure to tell them you are a member – or friend – of the DUCW so they know we are spreading the word about them and their Aussie-inspired business thriving here in Winnipeg.

By the way, we will be organising a Sunday Brunch there in the near future, so stay tuned for that.

Cheers! And happy Australia Day!
