Australia Day and Waitangi Day

We look forward to you joining us this Saturday, February 6, for our Australia Day and Waitangi Day event. Everything gets underway at 6:00 pm at the Scandinavian Cultural Centre, 764 Erin.

It is a potluck event, so we ask that you:

prepare a dish using kiwi fruit to enter into the Bake Off Contest, and/or
bring a meat dish, salad, veggie dish, or dessert (unless the kiwi fruit dish you bring is a dessert).

Please bring enough for yourselves and a bit extra, just in case.

It’s going to be a great night, with a fun trivia quiz on both countries, and the bar will be open.

See you there and then.

Celebrating Australia Day

If you would like to celebrate Australia Day with a distinctly Aussie flavour, then consider dropping into Miss Browns Hot Pressed Sandwich & Coffee Co. in Winnipeg between 7:30 am and 3:00 pm on Tuesday January 26. Perhaps a coffee before work, a mid-morning break, lunch, or just to say hi.

Located at 288 William St downtown (south-east of Red River College, and south-west of City Hall), owners Jenn (Cdn) and Steve (Aus) are planning additional Australian options to complement their already amazing menu for anyone who wants to drop in and say g’day.

Famous for their breakfast, Stumptown coffee, house-smoked meats, and fresh cooked local foods, it’s one of few places in town that actually know what you want when you ask for a long black or a flat white.

Be sure to tell them you are a member – or friend – of the DUCW so they know we are spreading the word about them and their Aussie-inspired business thriving here in Winnipeg.

By the way, we will be organising a Sunday Brunch there in the near future, so stay tuned for that.

Members of the DUCW are invited to Boston Pizza on Henderson Hwy on Friday night, Oct 2, to watch the AFL Grand Final.

9pm – drinks (Fishbowl Fridays – 8.99-10.50, 3oz)
10pm – Pre-game entertainment Bryan Adams & Chris Isaak and drinks
11pm – game starts and drinks
2am – final siren

Banished

In case you’ve missed this one, screening Monday nights on CBC Television is the 7-part miniseries Banished. Filmed in Australia as well as Manchester, England, the British drama is set in the first penal colony founded by the British in New South Wales.

In 1787 Britain banished its unwanted citizens – orphans, petty thieves, prostitutes and highwaymen – to Sydney, Australia. This series follows convicts Elizabeth (MyAnna Buring) and Tommy (Julian Rhind-Tutt), who are breaking the rules by being in a relationship. When their relationship is revealed, it sparks conflict and sets into motion a series of events that puts friendships and ideals in question during a time when survival depends on having the back of those you love.

Also starring are Russell Tovey and Australian David Wenham. The first two episodes have already screened and are available online. The series continues tonight at 9:00 pm and is available online. (Since I don’t have cable, be sure to check showtimes in your area.)

New Zealand on a Plate

Hey, foodies! Gusto TV – Canada’s new food and lifestyle specialty channel – is premiering New Zealand on a Plate on Thursday July 30 at 10:00 and 10:30 pm ET/PT.

The series takes viewers on a fresh and unique culinary journey of New Zealand, introduces some truly outstanding food cooked in beautiful outdoor locations by top chefs, and serves it all with excellent wines. Check it out!

By the way, they are already into Season 4 in NZ, so this one looks like it’ll be around for quite a while.
