NZ vamp movie comes to Polo Park

movie 2SilverCity Polo Park is screening the brilliantly funny NZ movie “What We Do In The Shadows“. It’s running from today until at least next Thursday March 5 (check the theatre’s website for further dates)‎.

The 1hr 26min comedy horror follows the lives of Viago (Taika Waititi), Deacon (Jonathan Brugh), and Vladislav (Jemaine Clement), three flatmates who are just trying to get by and overcome life’s obstacles – being immortal vampires who must feast on human blood. Hundreds of years old, the vampires are finding that beyond sunlight catastrophes, hitting the main artery, and not being able to get a sense of their wardrobe without a reflection, modern society has them struggling with the mundane – paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts. American actor and comedian Todd Barry (Rick Rycroft, The Associated Press Files)

For all you fans of the show, New York comedian Todd Barry, known as the “Third Conchord” on the HBO series Flight of the Conchords, is bringing his deadpan antics to the Park Theatre on May 21. Tickets, which sell for $22, are available the Park Theatre, Music Trader and online at Ticketfly.

Flight of the Conchords ran on HBO Canada, and although the series is wrapped, you can still catch them on Facebook and YouTube, so get watching!

aus day cake aus day crowd aus day pie And so it was that on Saturday January 31, we gathered at the Scandinavian Cultural Centre to celebrate our national days – Australia Day and Waitangi Day.

After a rousing rendition of our favourite anthems – thanks to the Hydesmiths for bringing some new and singable versions – we dined on a menu of five delicious pies in the annual bake-off.

Rather than pick a winner, we opted for voting choices that included ‘best looker’, ‘brings back memories’ and ‘worthy of a floater’ – check your Aus/Kiwi lingo book if you’re confused about that last one.

Big thanks to Les Fitt, Margaret Munn, Grant Hinrichsen and Liz Hydesmith for your delicious pies, which were complemented by lots of yummy salads and desserts, courtesy of everyone else who attended.

Our magnificent celebratory cake was made and decorated by the very creative Debbie Griffiths, and we were thrilled to welcome a new friend and member Gemma Sea. The NOZ 3 quiz that was compiled by Judy and Charlie Powell certainly got top votes for one of the best ever, and the specialty coffees made by the Hydesmiths added an air of sophistication to our during-and-after-dinner conversation. Several rounds of two-up by Charlie Powell saw five winners, including a young man named Jacob from Germany (staying with the Hydesmiths for a few months), and many good sports – onya, Joanne Debenham!

Lots of fun and hearty conversation resulted in a great night for us all! 

100th ANZAC remembered

biplaneOn Saturday, 25th April, 2015, the centenary of ANZAC Day will be commemorated across Commonwealth countries around the world. The Down Under Club of Winnipeg will be marking this event with members, special guests and inviting the public to remember http://bestacnedrug.com this occasion with us at the Western Canada Aviation Museum.

This event will be given the ceremonial respect it deserves with social and historical activities to follow. We look forward to seeing you there. Mark your calendars.
